About Ricky van Broekhoeven and the open discussion

Ricky is a renowned artist in Eindhoven who combines technology and art around sounds and vibrations.

Ricky has a fascination for events that are usually hidden, but can be experienced under the right conditions; the earth shaking as tectonic plates collide, radiation in space from the beginning of time, sound waves traveling through the body. He’s intrigued by things that out scale him as a human being, and our physical reaction to natural phenomena. In his laboratory studio he engineers otherworldly objects, immersive spaces and synesthetic machines.

During this open discussion you will interact with Ricky, know more about his inspiration for sound and it might trigger you to perceive sound in a different way.

A guided tour to his exhibition

Ricky is currently exhibting a retrospective exhibition Hyper Hertz at the Temporary Art Center (Vonderweg 1, 5611 BK Eindhoven) where he shows his collection of synesthetic machines. In this exhibition you can experience how sound energy adjusts space and transforms matter.

The guided tour will take place after the presentation at the Kazerne (20:30). People who are interested can walk together with the facilitators and organizers.

His exhibition at the TAC will stay until June 16th.

Ever heard about Light Instruments? Are they like Musical Instruments and can I see them in action?

Tom Bergman is a pioneer in a new art discipline that is arising: creating content for Light Instruments. During this interactive presentation you will be introduced to the concept of Light Instruments including the wonderful promises. For example, the mesmerizing effect can be used to fight burnouts. But also, the present challenges will be addressed and how other art disciplines like music, choreography and animation could be of help here. Real life examples will be shown at the Kazerne and you are invited to join the extended exhibition that will take place at the Temporary Art Center (Vonderweg 1, 5611 BK Eindhoven) on the same night, starting at 20:30. The interested people can walk together with the facilitators / organizator.

About Tom Bergman (MSc)

For many years, Tom worked as Principal Scientist for Philips Research involved in different high-tech projects. Using his strong rational competences and having great affinity for creativity and imagination, in the last 10 years at Philips, he worked in the LED based Lighting “Visual Experiences” group where he lead research projects that evolve the user experience from creating new user interfaces (e.g. color-wheel of living colors)) to new form factors luminaires to Light Instruments. The latest Light Instruments made by Tom are used and programmed to help people mentally restore by creating relaxing light effects.
Besides his work with dynamic light, in the last years he also has been very active experiencing new techniques like ceramic, stone, woodwork and forgery ( for some examples see https://www.tombergman.nl).

About the workshop
During this workshop, Tom will introduce you to the concept of Light Instruments by explaining it in detail. A comparison to music instruments will be made to define a vocabulary. With these new concepts you will understand the new challenges and, more importantly, opportunities that come with the vast number of addressable LEDs and computing power that is now available.

By joining this workshop, you will pioneer in this “new” industry, because there are no composers yet for the dynamic light effect made possible by a wide variety of light instruments already available. So, it is an open field for experimentation and you will be challenged to be a composer and create a melodious harmony with light!!.

What knowledge or competences do you need? Presently, for Light Instruments this needs two different competences:

(1) creativity and artistic insight into visual pleasing light effects to invent new sequences.

(2) Simple programming skill (Arduino; basic C++) to realize the intended dynamic light effects

If you manage only one of these competences, do not worry!. We will make small teams ensuring that both capabilities are present in each team. Each team will have a Light Instrument at their disposal. At the end of this workshop every team will present its lighting composition and its source of inspiration.

About Studio Krom
Krom is an Eindhoven based design studio by Joris van Oers and Cas Slaats. They use technology to turn their curiosity into experiences. Intrigued by human-computer interaction they build computer systems that they direct, follow or collaborate with. By analysing, experimenting and prototyping, Krom explores ideas and concepts in the realm of design, art and technology.

Daydreams as experiments
During this presentation, Krom will elaborate on their design process by discussing their experimental work. You will be encouraged to ask imaginative questions like: Could we paint with our voices? How would it feel to brainstorm with a computer? What happens when a room recognises emotions and emphasises with us? The duo will share how they use technology as a tool to bring these fantasies to life. After the presentation, there will be room for trying out some of their experiments and prototypes at their exhibition. All of this at The Temporary Art Center.

Each city sings, each neighbourhood sings, each block, each street, each public space, each private space, filled with the echoes of its past, its wanted activities, its unwanted activities, and its music.

Come listen to the hidden sounds of the city. Artist and educator David McCallum will lead participants on a soundwalk of Eindhoven to rediscovery the sounds unheard. McCallum will also walk you through the subjects of soundwalking, acoustic ecology and their places within the histories of music and contemporary art, and help you rediscover the pleasures of listening to the things that you have forgotten.

About David
David NG McCallum is an artist and educator whose work explores the unintended opportunities of technology. Working with electronics, craft, and performance, McCallum finds the expressivity hiding in systems. He is currently a lecturer at the Department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology, was previously a guest researcher at the Smart Textiles Design Lab at the Swedish School of Textiles, and the Editor of Musicworks magazine.
